The problem with ice baths is that the cold you experience in them is an unrelenting, painfully penetrating physical cold. You also need to stay in an ice bath for 15-30 minutes for it to be effective.
Furthermore, exercise is not recommended for at least another 12 to 24 hours. Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC) is very different. Not only are WBC sessions no longer than 3 minutes and you can return to exercise immediately afterward, but they also reach lower temperatures. How Whole Body Cryotherapy Improves Running
The reason WBC may help you to improve your running performance is that it decreases recovery time, increases athletic performance and boosts the body’s metabolic rate. A study published in the International Journal of Sports Physiology in 2015 showed WBC enhanced acute recovery of running performance in well-trained athletes.
The results showed cryotherapy improved acute recovery during high-intensity intermittent exercise and that the improvements might be induced by enhanced oxygenation of the working muscles, as well as a reduction in cardiovascular strain.
What Happens During a Cryotherapy Treatment?
In a WBC session, the body is exposed to extremely low temperatures of up to −180°f for up to 3 minutes. During this time, the average skin temperature drops to near zero whilst the core body temperature remains unchanged. Once you are in the Cryosauna your head and neck area are not covered by the chamber and so are exposed to room air temperature above the device. Nitrogen vapor then fills the chamber and the sudden exposure to extreme cold causes a major vasoconstriction of blood vessels in the dermal layer of the skin. A trained operator stays with you throughout your treatment.
During your session, blood is directed away from the skin and targeted to protect the vital organs. This stabilizes the body’s core temperature and also enables blood to enrich with hormones, oxygen and enzymes. As soon as you finish your treatment, your blood vessels then do the exact opposite – they dilate. Enriched blood then flows back to the rest of your body. Your blood flows faster and this assists the lymph system to work more effectively.
How Many Treatments Should You Have?
In order to achieve the maximum sports improvement results with Cryotherapy, in addition to a healthy nutrition and training plan, it’s recommend that you book for a minimum of 10 sessions within a 2-3 week period and it’s safe to have a Cryotherapy session every day. After your first few sessions, your increased metabolic rate tends to last longer between treatments and therefore the benefits are cumulative.
